Former Minister Imam Nahrawi Sentenced to 7 Years in Jail

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The panel of judges sentenced former youth and sports minister Imam Nahrawi to seven years’ imprisonment.

“[The court] charges Imam Nahrawi with seven years and a fine of Rp400 million or a replacement of three months behind bars,” the presiding judge read the court’s ruling in an online trial on Monday, June 29.

Previously, the prosecutors of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) demanded Imam be charged with ten years in prison and a fine of Rp500 million or a subsidiary jail term of six months. Besides the main charges, the former minister was also demanded to pay Rp19 billion.

The prosecutors also demanded the latter’s political rights to be elected as a public figure be scrapped for five years after serving the sentence.

The prosecutors believed Imam had received a bribe worth Rp11.5 billion in the disbursement of the Youth and Sports Ministry’ grant funds for the National Sports Committee (KONI). The bribe was delivered via his personal assistant Miftahul Ulum, who has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.

The bribe was given to expedite the fund disbursement process proposed by the central KONI in 2018.

Besides the bribe, the KPK prosecutors argued Imam Nahrawi had received gratifications totaling Rp8.6 billion from KONI Sec-Gen Ending Fuad Hamidy and a sports program dubbed Indonesia Emas while serving as minister.
