KPU must safeguard privacy of election data: VP

Jakarta – The General Elections Commission (KPU) must secure the privacy of election data, Vice President Ma’ ruf Amin stressed on Friday.

He made the declaration in response to reports of an alleged leak of voter information from the KPU site.

” We regret the leakage, for that reason, we hope that KPU can really keep the confidentiality (of electoral data),” the VP said after attending the 3rd National Working Conference of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) here on Friday.

The Vice President said that lately, data leakages have been frequent, which should end up being a cause for concern for all celebrations.

Previously on Wednesday (November 29, 2023), KPU said that it is working together with a team from the National Cops’s Directorate of Cybercrime and the State Intelligence Company (BIN) to examine the report of the supposed leakage of 2024 election data.

” We are still making sure whether the information is true or not. We are dealing with the groups from the National Cyber and Crypto Firm (BSSN), the cybercrime group of the National Authorities, BIN, and the Ministry of Interaction and Informatics,” KPU chairperson Hasyim Asy’ari stated at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.

The KPU on Tuesday (November 28) said that it had actually received info about a supposed information breach by a hacker called “Jimbo,” who claimed to have actually successfully hacked the KPU website and accessed voter information.
