Anies Baswedan: Eid al-Fitr May Be Banned If COVID-19 Cases Rise

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan issued a circular on the implementation of the health protocols against COVID-19 in worship and religious activities during Ramadan 1442 Hijri. The circular No. 4 of 2021 was signed today, April 12, 2021.

The circular was passed in an effort to prevent and break the chain of virus spread during the holy month by referring to the Religious Affairs Ministry’s Circular No. SE. 03 of 2021 on the guidelines for Ramadan prayers and Eid al-Fitr 1442 Hijri.

“The Jakarta Provincial Government asks all management of mosques or musalla (prayer rooms) in Jakarta to abide by policies as follows,” wrote the circular.

First, the implementation of prayers and religious activities such as fard prayers (five obligatory prayers a day), tarawih and witr prayers, Quran recitation, and i’tikaf (seclusion in a mosque) are allowed with limited attendance to 50 percent of the total capacity and under strict health protocols of one-meter safe distance. Congregations are also obliged to bring their own prayer mats.

“The duration of Ramadan lectures, subh lectures, or tausiyah is limited to a maximum of 15 minutes,” as quoted from the clause of the circular.

Additionally, the attendance of the commemoration event of Nuzulul Qur’an at mosques and musalla is also limited to 50 percent of the total capacity and under strict health protocols.

The activities of collecting and distributing Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah (ZIS), as well as Zakat Fitr, are carried out under health protocols and by avoiding crowds. The Eid al-Fitr prayers can be held at mosques or open fields with strict health protocols.

“Unless the development of the COVID-19 case increases based on the announcement of the COVID-19 task force,” said the circular signed by Anies Baswedan.
