Aceh’s 19 anglers repatriated from India after year-long prison term

Banda Aceh – An overall of 19 Acehnese anglers will be repatriated to Indonesia on December 12 after conclusion of a year-long jail term in India.

” The fishermen will be repatriated and are set up to arrive in Aceh on December 12, 2020,” Deputy Secretary General of Panglima Laot Aceh, a tribal leader in the fishing community in Aceh Province, Miftach Cut Adek mentioned here on Tuesday.

Adek kept in mind that the Acehnese anglers had actually served a one year prison term for unlawful fishing.

The anglers departed from Aceh in December 2019 aboard the KM Selat Malaka vessel however were detained by the Indian marine authorities on December 24, 2019.

According to Adek, the sea waves drifted the anglers after their vessel experienced engine failure and entered the Indian maritime area.

” The boat, led by skipper Samsul Bahri, encountered engine failure and was apprehended by the Indian patrol team in the Nicobar waters,” he stated.

Adek said that 31 other Acehnese anglers were still apprehended in India.

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry had earlier verified that a minimum of 88 Indonesian anglers were detained abroad and were awaiting trial for alleged illegal fishing in foreign waters.

Of the 88 anglers, 32 were in Malaysia, 50 remained in India, 5 were in Papua New Guinea, and one was in Myanmar.
