VP Ma’ruf Amin Explains Herd Immunity and How It Is Linked to Religion

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Indonesian Vice President Ma’ruf Amin on Monday went on Youtube calling people to strictly adhere to the Java-Bali PPKM social restriction that the government has implemented for the past couple of weeks in hopes of suppressing the number of Covid-19 cases.

Uniquely, Ma’ruf cited a section in the book written by a Banten ulema who lived in Mecca and is said to have been an Imam for the Masjidil Haram grand mosque in the 19th century and recited a verse inside the Holy Quran noting its story on preparedness against danger.

He then linked this preparedness to current events where Indonesia is eyeing to achieve 70 percent herd immunity through the national Covid-19 vaccination program.

“According to ulemas [vaccination] is a must which allows us to prevent destructions or dangers,” said the Vice President in a brief Youtube video uploaded by the VP secretariat account on February 1.

Ma’ruf Amin then asserted that people are obliged to participate in the vaccination, especially the Muslim community. “The obligation to be vaccinated will not end until 182 million population are vaccinated. We are committing sins if the herd immunity is not achieved,” said the VP.
