IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police through its virtual police unit had disbursed official warnings for 200 social media accounts that have allegedly spread offensive contents related to SARA or ethnicity, religion, and race.
“From February 23 up to April 12, 2021, there had been 329 complaints filed to us but only 200 of them were believed to contain some form of hate speech,” director of cybercrime Brigadier General Slamet Ulandi confirmed to Tempo on April 13.
Moreover, 91 contents that did not pass verification were not followed up while 38 contents are still undergoing verification.
The police brigadier elaborated that the social media platform with the most reported contents is Twitter with 195 contents followed by Facebook with 112 contents, Instagram with 13 contents, Youtube with 8 contents, and WhatsApp with a single content reported to the virtual police unit.
The virtual police unit works by flagging potentially problematic contents which contains criminal offences, those shifting through the millions of online contents would immediately report to their supervisor about potential violatory contents before handing them to a group of experts in the field of linguistic, criminal expert, and experts in the the field of electronic information and transactions (UU ITE).
