Malang M 6.1 Earthquake Kills 3, Damages Thousands of Buildings

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Malang Regency reported that the 6.1 magnitude earthquake on Saturday, had damaged 3,993 buildings, killed three people, and injured 54.

The BPBD Malang head of emergency and logistics, Sadono Irawan, said the damaged buildings spread across 25 sub-regencies but are mostly in the regencies of Dampit, Tirtoyudo, and Ampelgading.

They also reported that the earthquake had displaced 600 people from their homes. They are now taking refuge in camps at three local villages in Sumbertangkil, Jogomulyan, and Kepatihan. 

“We have opened community kitchens in Ampelgading and Dampit to serve the basic need for food of the evacuees,” said Sadono on April 13. 

The Malang disaster mitigation has set a 14-day emergency status since the earthquake on Sunday. It has also established emergency and logistical posts that are collectively coordinated along with the Armed Forces (TNI), Police, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), regional organizations, and volunteers.
