Police Chief Optimistic Ex-KPK Employees to Improve Corruption Perceptions Index

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo believes that the joining of 44 former employees of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will bring positive impacts, particularly on the Corruption Perception Index in Indonesia.

“We believe that as they join [the police], the Corruption Perception Index can be improved,” Listyo gave a speech in the inauguration ceremony at the National Police Headquarters, Jakarta, Thursday, December 9.

Transparency International Indonesia announced that the country’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) fell to 37 in 2020 from 40 in the previous year.

Listyo quoted President Jokowi’s statement that eradicating corruption was not only a matter of law enforcement but also to deal with the root of the problems. To reach the roots, he added, the police needed to strengthen its corruption prevention division. “As you all join [the police], I believe it will strengthen the organization,” he said before the ex-KPK employees.

He further asked them to oversee the National Economic Recovery Program. The police chief also believed that their good track records would ensure good distribution of the State Budget on target. “And minimize the risk of budget leakage,” Listyo said.

The 44 former employees of KPK are victims of the national civic knowledge test. They were fired from the anti-graft body as they failed to pass the problematic test, which was a requirement to become state civil servants (ASN). The Indonesian Ombudsman and the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) stated that the test violated procedures and human rights.
