Pilkada Candidates Face Disqualification over Health Protocol Violations

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security, Mahfud MD, reminded candidates for the upcoming 2020 regional elections (Pilkada) to adhere to existing COVID-19 health protocols and elaborates that there will be sanctions handed to those who violate. 

“Candidates and their campaign team must not take this lightly. We will take action against people who violate the health protocol, just like anyone else,” said Mahfud MD on November 23. “Depending on the severity of the violation, [electoral disqualification] can be imposed.”

Mahfud explained that the simultaneous regional election campaign until its 59th day had run relatively smoothly despite several drawbacks in the form of health protocol violation. 

The coordinating minister claims there are only 2.2 percent of electoral campaign events that were caught violating either physical distancing regulations or face masks. This means there were 1,510 violations from a total of 73,500 events. 

During this moment, Mahfud MD also mentioned that Indonesin authorities have processed dozens of cases with some already entering its investigation stage.
