People’s Mobility Causes COVID-19 Surge, Governor Anies Says

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan confirmed the surge in COVID-19 cases in the capital city was attributable to the people’s mobility. He meant that the more active residents doing outside activities, the higher the number of virus cases.

“The impact of people’s mobility on the hike in cases is so obvious,” said Anies in a virtual discussion on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.

Anies presented the curve of daily active cases in September which was increased compared to August. The curve, he added, was dropped in early November, yet was starting to move up again.

“The previous long weekends that we allowed have consequences and now we are seeing a surge in cases again,” he remarked.

According to the governor, the spike was recorded on September 1-12, 2020, following the long holidays on August 20-23, 2020.

Within the 12 days, the number of active cases rose 49 percent. The additional infections even contributed to 25 percent of the total cumulative cases. Besides, the COVID-19 death toll also increased by 17 percent.

Due to the facts, Anies Baswedan decided to pull the emergency brake and Jakarta was under the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) on September 14, 2020. Presently, the capital city is under Transitional PSBB.
