Pekanbaru Holds COVID-19 Vaccination for People with Disabilities, Children

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Celebrating its 66th anniversary, the Pekanbaru government (a city in Riau, West Sumatra province) on August 8 held a COVID-19 mass vaccination drive for students and the disabled that was attended by thousands of participants.

The Head of the Riau Health Agency, Mimi Yuliani Nazir, on Monday said the program included children above the age of 12 and people with disabilities as they were considered susceptible to COVID-19. This program goes parallel with the vaccinations for elderly groups, teachers, and school workers.

“The preparations were done with the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) across regencies and cities that back the government’s program to accelerate vaccinations,” said Nazir on August 9.

Nazir said the vaccinations would continue until 70 percent of the population had been inoculated against COVID-19. She encouraged people to take their children to partake in the vaccination as she acknowledged that disinformation and hoaxes were still prevalent and was feared to keep people from being vaccinated.
