Nadiem Makarim to Issue Rules on Sexual Violence Prevention on Campus

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry will soon issue ministerial regulations (Permendikbud) on the prevention and mitigation of sexual violence in universities.

“We have tried to harmonize this Permendikbud draft, and it will soon be promulgated,” said Secretary of the Higher Education Directorate General, Paristiyanti Nurwardani, during the dissemination event of Kampus Merdeka (Independent Campus) on Friday, August 27.

According to Paristiyanti, Nadiem had synchronized a number of regulations, including the prevention of sexual assault. The minister, she added, also wanted Indonesia to be free from intolerance, sexual assault, and bullying.

“The three major sins should not happen again at all levels of education experienced by students, especially women,” she said.

Previously reported, the minister had brought up the regulations since last year. At the meeting in the Parliament Complex last February 2020, Nadiem said he would look for a formula on how to overcome intolerance, sexual violence, and bullying in educational institutions.

According to Nadiem Makarim, steps that need to be taken are not only character building, appeals, or training, but also sanctions. “There must be firm action to be carried out at every level [of educational institutions] against these three sins,” he said.
