Muhammadiyah Advises Muslims to Offer Eid al-Adha Prayer at Home

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – One of the country’s largest Islamic organizations, Muhammadiyah, suggested Muslims perform Eid al-Adha prayer at homes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 feast of sacrifice was predicted to fall on Friday, July 31.

“The recommendation to perform Eid prayer at homes is issued because the Covid-19 transmission has not dropped significantly,” said the Muhammadiyah’s Tarjih (legislative) and Tajdid (reform) Council Head, Syamsul Anwar, in a teleconference on Wednesday, June 24.

Anwar said that Indonesia was entering a ‘new normal’ era, yet Muhammadiyah assessed that the term was just a concept to support economic activities.

Muslims in regions that are classified as green zones, or unaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic, are allowed to hold Eid al-Adha prayer in a small field or open spaces under the predetermined health protocols, he added.

“Those in green zones are permitted to perform the Eid prayer in fields, but just for a small group, such as in their respective community units (RT/RW),” Anwar explained.

Muhammadiyah further called on people in green zones to also comply with the health protocols, such as maintaining cleanliness, body hygiene, checking body temperature, as well as avoiding handshaking and crowds.
