Massive Cyber Attacks; Govt Urges Issuance of Personal Data Protection Bill

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Communication and Information (Kominfo) Minister, Johnny G. Plate, said the bill on personal data protection is necessary to ensure the national interests. The recent massive hacking and cyber attacks, he opined, also strengthened the importance of the law.

“The government hopes to work together to immediately complete the bill and come to a joint agreement with the House of Representatives (DPR),” said Johnny during a meeting with the DPR’s Commission I on Tuesday, September 1.

In the session, the minister thanked each faction of Commission I for deliberating the bill with the government with the notes that had been submitted.

The minister added that the bill needed to be ratified as other countries demanded Indonesia to have policies that are equal to theirs in order to process personal data between countries, either on the global or regional level.

“Data is a nation’s capital, data is a nation’s time. Because of that, it is our collective responsibility to produce relevant data, not only for Indonesia but also for the global needs, the present, and the future,” said Johnny G. Plate.
