La Nina: BMKG Warns of Potential Tropical Storms in NTT in Early 2022

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued early warnings concerning the La Nina phenomenon in the late 2021 to early 2022. Among those warnings, BMKG warned of potential tropical storms that would frequently occur in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in January and February 2022.

“It requires caution,” says BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati in a virtual national coordination meeting of BMKG on Friday, October 2021. Previously, a La Nina early warning has been issued by BMKG on October 18, 2021.

At the time, the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean had cooled down past the threshold for La Nina and continuously increased. Thus, BMKG concluded La Nina may occur on a small to moderate scale that would last until February 2022.

Based on the same scale as last year’s, BMKG said this phenomenon would increase the rain intensity from 20 to 70 percent. In the next few months, NTT is among those to see increased rainfall with highest in February 2022, according to BMKG’s predictions.
