Christie’s woos millennial buyers with new Michael Jordan-themed auction

Christie’s is working together with sneaker purveyor Arena Item for the online sale “Original Air”, which is billed as “the most extensive sneaker record of Michael Jordan’s era-defining Chicago Bulls career”.

” Original Air” features a choice of Michael Jordan game-worn sneakers and unusual souvenirs that represent the most iconic minutes of Jordan’s decades-long career and his enduring impact on culture and design.

Amongst them are a set of Nike Air Ship that Jordan wore for a quick time for the NBA preseason and early games of his novice season. According to the basketball legend’s choice, the left shoe is notably a size 13.5, while the best shoe is a size 13.

Very rare on the marketplace, this game-worn set of “Nike Air Ship, MJ Gamer Exclusive” (1984) is approximated to offer between $350,000 and $550,000

Another star lot is a set of Air Jordan 7 “Olympic” that Jordan notoriously wore for the final of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic basketball competition.

These renowned tennis shoes are sourced from a former receptionist of the Ambassador Hotel in Barcelona, where Jordan and his fellow colleagues stayed during the competition.

These Jordan 7s are now anticipated to bring up to $70,000 during Christie’s “Original Air” sale, which will happen from July 30 through August 13 on the auction house’s site.

” The pieces we have actually put together for this auction are really distinct, and will have deep resonance for Jordan fans, sneaker connoisseurs and popular culture collectors alike,” said John McPheters, Arena Goods co-founder and co-CEO, in a declaration.

” Original Air” is the very first in a series of athletic-themed online sales, respectively entitled “THE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE: Pictures by Walter Iooss, Jr.” and “For the Love of the Game,” which will collectively explore the long-lasting impact of sports on art.

” We sought to offer only the highest quality pieces in the same way we evaluate items for Christie’s High-end sales– trying to find quality, rarity, and individuality of design,” Aline Sylla-Walbaum, Global Handling Director of High-end at Christie’s, said in a declaration.

These brand-new sales will take place a few weeks after Sotheby’s made headlines for the record-breaking sale of a 1985 pair of Nike Air Jordan 1sts, signed by none besides Michael Jordan.

The shoes went under the hammer for $560,000, which marks a record amount for a set of tennis shoes at auction.

The resale market for classic footwear is experiencing a boom in the last few years, driven by an ever-growing class of millennial collectors that seek shoes with a prominent pedigree as an alternative property class.

According to American investment bank Cowen, the global secondhand market for tennis shoes is forecasted to be worth $6 billion by 2025.
