Kominfo Ministry: Don’t Accuse Govt of Being Involved in Hacking Attacks

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Ministry’s director-general of application and informatics, Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, demanded the public not hastily accuse the government of being involved in hacking attacks against online media and activists’ social media accounts.

Semuel stressed that there must be data and facts to prove such accusations.

“Let’s work together because someone may do that to make a fight between us, between the government and civil group coalitions,” he said in a Ngobrol @Tempo online discussion on Thursday, August 27.

According to Semuel, hacking cases against people’s accounts or news media outlets were a global phenomenon and occurred in many countries. Anyone, he added, could do it.

“It is too a priori when accusing the government of doing this without data. We want to combat it as well,” he said.

Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SafeNet) Executive Director, Damar Juniarto, recorded six cyberattacks throughout August 2020 against high-risk groups such as journalists, academics, and activists. One of which was against Tempo.co.
