Jokowi Demands Immediate Completion of Emission Reduction Stages

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called for an immediate completion of the reduction stages of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“Finalize the regulation and the funding instruments that we expect, including incentives for stakeholders that we must also observe,” said the President when opening a limited meeting regarding the continuance of cooperation in reducing Indonesia-Norway GHG emissions at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Monday, July 6.

He said that based on the ratified climate change conference, Indonesia had set a target to drop the carbon emission by 29 percent by 2030: 17.2 percent from the forestry sector, 11 percent from the energy sector, 0.32 percent from the waste, 0.13 percent from the agricultural sector, and 0.11 percent from each industrial and transportation sector.

“We must ensure that this carbon control has a significant impact on the decline of GHG emissions by 26 percent in 2020 and 29 percent in 2030,” the state head underlined.

Additionally, he demanded programs on environmental recoveries such as peat protection and acceleration of forest and land rehabilitation be continued. He also asked for constant vigilance against wildfires, particularly ahead of the dry season.

Jokowi also said other existing measures such as the protection of biodiversity in an effort to protect forests and restore natural habitat must be ensured to run well, too. “Also, the development of biodiesel B30, B50, and up to B100, as well as the development of solar energy and wind energy. I see that we have started this program and we should keep them on the move,” Jokowi said.
