Jakarta’s Disposable Plastic Bag Ban Effective in Early July

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Jakarta administration is set to impose a total ban on the use of disposable plastic bags as of July 1st, which is overseen by the Governor’s Regulation No.142/2019.

This policy effectively requires the use of environmentally friendly alternative bags in shopping malls up to traditional markets.

However, many traditional market traders have yet completely understood the new regulation, which was evident at the Palmerah Market that Tempo interviewed.

“We’re not aware of such regulation here,” said Angga Riawan Syahputra, a mobile phone accessory trader stationed at the Palmerah market on Monday.

Another trader we asked, Ardian, said that there had been no initial announcement regarding the ban against disposable plastic bags that would be imposed tomorrow.

The two also claim consumers most often do not bring their own shopping bags, which is why most traders still supply disposable plastic bags in case of consumers that have not prepared their own permanent shopping bag.
