Indonesia Covid-19 Cases Surge by 32.9 Percent in Past Week

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The national Covid-19 mitigation task force confirmed there was a significant hike in the number of new coronavirus cases in Indonesia throughout the past week.

“The positive cases increase by 32.9 percent nationwide,” said the task force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito at a press conference, Tuesday, Sept. 1.

He explained that five regions recorded the highest surge, namely West Java, Central Java, East Kalimantan, Jakarta, and East Java.

West Java Province contributed the highest weekly new cases by 100 percent. “From 707 to 1,681 cases,” Wiku said.

Central Java, meanwhile, reported a 56.4 percent hike from 837 to 1,309 infections. Followed by East Kalimantan at 39.2 percent from 732 to 1,019, Jakarta at 36.9 percent from 4,067 to 5,568, and East Java at 20.8 percent from 2,401 to 2,901.

Wiku underlined that the surge in virus infections must be specially addressed. All stakeholders and the public must exercise extra vigilance and be more disciplined in implementing the health protocols against Covid-19, especially those in the five regions.

“Because this must be suppressed. We need to keep holding massive testing but decreasing positive cases also at the same time,” he said.
