PGI Chair Slams ‘Infantile’ Alcohol Prohibition Bill Proposed by DPR

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) criticized the House of Representatives (DPR) for the plan to deliberate the alcohol prohibition bill. PGI chairperson Gomar Gultom slammed Bill’s approach as infantile.

“What I see in the approach for this alcohol prohibition bill is very infantile,” wrote Gomar in his written statement on November 13. “When will we be adults and take responsibility.”

The communion of Churches chairperson compared DPR’s decision with the United Arab Emirates that has now permitted alcohol consumption. This has made him further questioned Indonesia’s legislators that plan to prohibit alcoholic beverages.

What the country needs, according to Gomar, are sets of regulations and strict control along with consistent law enforcements which are already overseen by the Criminal Law Article 300 and 492 and the Trade Ministry’s Regulation No.25/2019.

“Not everything must be solved with a Law, especially with the diverse tradition Indonesian society has regarding alcoholic drinks,” said Gomar.

The PGI chairperson said it would be better for the DPR to focus more on the bills that are urgently needed such as the indigenous law community bill, sexual violence bill, and domestic workers’ protection bill, which he said were what the public has demanded to be completed.
