IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) in its year-end note presentation on Friday announced there remained an abundance of civilian rights violations happening. The foundation received at least 104 cases in 2021 which are dominated by freedom of expression.
Director of Jakarta Legal Aid (LBH) Febi Yonesta said the reports were dominated by freedom of expression issues and that state authorities, education institution workers, and civil organizations were the perpetrators in these reports.
“The violations included torture, forced arrest, up to the losses of lives,” said Febi on December 31.
Meanwhile, YLBHI chairperson Asfinawati said civilian political rights restraints continued to take place. She said there were many cases of violence and threats towards a person’s livelihood experienced by people who express their political views in public.
“This includes the right to self-determination as well as participation in policy-making,” Asfinawati said.
She gave an example where participants of the protests against the Job Creation Act (UU Cipta Kerja) became victims of violence and imprisonment. YLBHI recorded at least 20 protesters were found guilty by a court of law.
“There are surely more protesters of the Omnibus Law rallies who were found guilty who are not in our records,” she said.
