IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – An earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitudes on the Richter scale struck North Sulawesi Thursday evening, Jan. 21, reported the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The quake occurred at around 19: 23 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Reports said that the source was detected 134 kilometers northeast of Melonguane, Talaud Islands.
Despite the powerful magnitude, the agency noted the quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
Other than Melonguane, the agency confirmed that the tremor was felt in Tahuna, Ondong, Manado, Bitung, Bolaang Uki, Gorontalo, North Halmahera, and Galela areas.
The Manado Airport Authority Region VIII Head, Marulitua Edison, reported that no physical damage was found either at the terminal or runway of three airports in North Sulawesi. However, the authorities would recheck the condition.
The three airports, namely Miangas Airport and Melonguane Airport in Talaud Regency and Naha Airport in Sangihe Regency, did not serve flights when the earthquake occurred. In addition, Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado was relatively also safe. “Because the impact of the quake is low,” he said.
