342 People Take Refuge as Fire Razes Traditional House in Kalimantan

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – At least 342 people have taken refuge at their relatives’ houses after a betang traditional long house in Sayut Village, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan Province caught fire on Saturday night

“All of our belongings could not be saved because they were burned. Thank God our 342 residents survived the fire. For the time being, they are taking refuge at their relatives’ houses,” secretary of Sayut village administration Jarop told the Kapuas Hulu deputy district head while inspecting the scene of fire on Sunday.

Jarop said a total of 96 families or 342 people stayed at the betang traditional long house which comprised 51 doors.

The occupants rushed outdoors in panic when the fire spread quickly, he said.

“Our community are saddened by the fire. We expect assistance from the government and all parties. Since last night assistance for our community has poured in and we thank for their care,” he said.

The residents have agreed not to blame each other for the cause of the fire, he said.
