Service to nation does not stop after retirement: VP

Timika, Central Papua – Vice President Ma’ ruf Amin has said that service to the nation does not end after retirement as lots of opportunities stay open up to continue to serve the individuals.

He delivered the remarks while evaluating a free cataract and cleft lip surgery social activity initiated by the National Retired Army Association (PPAD) at Mimika Regional General Healthcare Facility here.

” This agenda brings a crucial message to everybody that retirement is simply an administrative concern and service to the country and individuals will never ever stop,” Amin said on Wednesday.

He urged residents to emulate the retired army officers who arranged the activity by ceaselessly serving the individuals.

The social activity was organized through cooperation in between the PPAD and the Central Papua province and Mimika district authorities, the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (Perdami), and PT Freeport Indonesia.

The Perdami team performed eye surgical treatment on 78 clients, and the Army General Medical Facility (RSPAD) team carried out cleft lip surgery on 12 patients.

Besides the complimentary cataract and cleft lip surgical treatments, health and dental professional assessments, as well as vitamins and standard foods were also provided during the activity.

PPAD Chairperson Lieutenant General (retd.) Doni Monardo stated the frequency of cataract among homeowners in Papua was behind the company’s decision to provide free eye surgery.

An unhealthy way of life may be an element behind the high variety of cataract cases in the region, he said.

Traditional Papuan homes have no windows or ventilation to disperse smoke from the fire lighted for cooking food in your home, he kept in mind.

Continued exposure to such smoke causes irritation that results in cataract development, Monardo stated.

“( The cataract) might start with a blot (in the eye), and it slowly affects the entire eye lens, triggering loss of vision,” the retired officer stated.
