Papua’s human rights group condemns armed attack on trainees

Jayapura, Papua – The Supporter for Papua Policy and Human Rights (PAK HAM) has condemned a deadly shooting occurrence in Ilaga Subdistrict, Puncak District, Papua Province, on Friday (Nov 20) that killed Atanius Murib (16) and hurt Manus Murib (16).

” The perpetrators have chosen acts of lethal violence as a method to achieve their objectives,” PAK HAM Director Matius Murib said in a press statement in Jayapura, the capital of Papua Province, on Sunday.

Matius Murib said taking human life was God’s authority, and assaulting Atanius Murib and Manus Murib, two regional trainees, could never ever be justified by any factor. In this regard, the wrongdoers had committed major human rights offenses.

They need to be brought to justice, he said while advising regional communities and security personnel to support project on making December 2020 a serene month for creating “Papua as a house of peace” by stopping all types of violence.

Puncak Cops Chief Adjunct Sen.Coms.Decky Saragih exposed earlier that unidentified armed attackers shot the 2 students on Friday. Atanius Murib passed away at the criminal activity scene while Manus Murib made it through the shooting event.

Prior to his evacuation to Timika, he told the cops that he and Atanius Murib were attacked on their way to Agandume Subdistrict.

The 2 trainees were shot from a height inside a jungle between Agandume and Dume Subdistricts. Their aggressors then decreased to check the victims, and take a photo of them prior to leaving the criminal activity scene, Saragih stated.

After knowing that the attackers had actually left the location, Manus Murib informed the police that he attempted to seek a help of residents of Jakimaki Town. A priest and several villagers brought Murib to the Ilaga university hospital to receive a healthcare.

Departed Atanius Murib would be evacuated by his household to be buried in his town, Saragih included.

The Indonesian province of Papua has continued to attest to a vicious circle of violence, with armed Papuan criminal groups in the districts of Intan Jaya and Nduga targeting civilians and security workers over the past couple of months.

Intan Jaya tape-recorded its bloodiest month in September this year, with armed groups releasing a series of attacks in the location that declared the lives of two soldiers and two civilians and injured 2 others.

The well-known armed groups in the Indonesian province continued their acts of horror in October.

On October 9, 2020, for example, an armed group assailed a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) established by the federal government to examine a current shooting in Mamba village, Sugapa sub-district.

In the event, a TGPF member– Gadjah Mada University (UGM) speaker Bambang Purwoko– was shot in the leg, while a TNI soldier– Very first Sgt Faisal Akbar of the Hitadipa Job Force– continual injuries on the waist.
