New Armed Force Chief Pledges to Restore Security in Papua

Jakarta. Newly-installed Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) Leader Admiral Yudo Margono stated bring back order and security in Papua is among his leading priorities throughout his brief tenure in office, as he officially received the command from predecessor General Andika Perkasa in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Yudo stated he will check out the restive area in eastern Indonesia “at the first chance” to get firsthand knowledge of the scenario before making any tactical decision.

However Yudo ruled out the so-called military operation in Papua, stressing that he will continue with the current “territorial operation” instead.

” In my viewpoint, the existing escalation there is still classified as criminal law offenses that become cops authority to handle, but we will assist enforce the law,” Yudo told reporters after the handover event of the military command at the TNI headquarters in East Jakarta.

On Monday, the president said that the TNI needs to take a firmer method versus escalating armed attacks in Papua to avoid them from becoming a “lengthy problem” in nationwide security.

” We will assess the situation before I report to the president. I will go to [Papua] at the very first opportunity I get together with the chiefs of staff to evaluate directly what is actually occurring there,” Yudo said.
