Indonesia’s Covid-19 Recoveries Pass 100,000

Jakarta. The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients in Indonesia crosses the 100,000 mark on Thursday, while confirmed cases of infection continue to surge.

Indonesia has not reached its peak as the virus has been spreading faster since the beginning of the month, but the number of recoveries is increasingly beating active cases.

The number of patients recovering from the disease rose by 2,017 for a total of 100,674 nationwide, representing 68.4 percent of the total cases.

The country has added 2,266 new cases of coronavirus in the 24-hour period to take its total to 147,211, including 6,418 deaths.

Surging cases in Jakarta shows no sign of easing with 594 new cases on Thursday, bringing its total number of cases to 31,610.

It has added more than 10,200 cases throughout the month and surpassed East Java and the province with the most cases.

East Java meanwhile is unable to contain the spread of the virus, reporting 371 more cases for a total of 29,257. It registered the highest death toll of the day, with 24 more Covid-19 deaths for a total of 2,098, twice as many deaths as in Jakarta.

Both provinces alone account for 41 percent of the national count.

But Jakarta bears the brunt of the current outbreak, with more than 8,700 active cases that threaten to overwhelm its health system. The city has reported that 70 percent of ICU beds for Covid-19 patients have been occupied.

West Java recorded 199 new cases, the highest daily rise in the past week, to take the province’s total to 8,988. The country’s most populous province ranks fifth among the worst-affected provinces but it has the third biggest number of active cases, currently standing at 3,896.

South Kalimantan saw the highest rise in more than a month, with 181 new infections for a total of 7,544 cases. It was the only province outside Java Island that saw a three-digit figure in the day.

The number of confirmed cases in Central Java, the third worst-hit province, passed 12,000 after adding 168 more cases.

South Sulawesi reported 59 new cases, the fourth day in a row it saw a two-digit figure, to take its total to 11,278.

North Sumatra also added 59 new cases in a highly fluctuating trend this month that at one point saw 218 cases in a day. But it has emerged as new hotspot by adding more than 2,000 cases since August 1, for a total of 5,957 cases as of Thursday.
