Jakarta. Indonesia reported 2,197 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, mainly due to surging cases in the worst-affected provinces of Jakarta and East Java, while other hotspots saw just two-digit daily figures.
Southeast Asia’s biggest country has now accumulated 149,408 confirmed cases, including 6,500 deaths. The daily death toll increased by 82, the highest in the last 17 days.
The number of cured or discharged Covid-19 patients has jumped by 2,317 in the last 24 hours for a total of 102,991. It’s for the third day in a row that recoveries have exceeded 2,000, taking the proportion to overall cases to 68.9 percent.
Jakarta recorded 657 new cases on Thursday, the third highest daily rise since the outbreak, to take its total to 32,267 cases, including 1,063 deaths. The capital city has added more than 10,800 cases month to date.
East Java also saw a spike of 458 new cases to bring its total to 29,715. It reported 30 new deaths, double the number of Covid-19 fatalities in Jakarta on the same day, to bring its total death toll to 2,128.
Both provinces contributed 51 percent to the national daily count.
East Kalimantan reached a new high with 195 new cases, a sudden surge in the province not considered as a hotspot. According to the provincial Covid-19 task force, the majority of the daily count has come from the city of Balikpapan, which added 132 new cases after an extensive contact tracing since Thursday.
The province, which has been designated as home to the country’s future capital, has a total of 2,892 cases including 105 deaths.
No other provinces reported a three-digit figure in the day.
Central Java, the third most-affected province, added 96 new cases for a total of 12,188, including 818 deaths.
South Sulawesi recorded 98 new cases and no deaths, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 11,376, including 347 deaths.
Coronavirus cases in West Java have increased by 93 since yesterday for a total of 9,081. With 252 Covid-19 deaths overall, the province has the lowest death toll among other hotspots.
North Sumatra registered just 21 cases to continue a declining trend for four consecutive days, taking its total to 5,978.
South Kalimantan also saw a sharp drop in daily cases, from 181 yesterday to 74. Its total cases stood at 7,618, including 328 deaths, as of Friday.
Indonesia has nearly 40,000 active cases from all 34 provinces.
