Jakarta. Indonesia reported 1,241 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Wednesday in another record high for the second consecutive day, taking the country’s total to 34,316.

A day earlier, daily new cases surpassed the 1,000 mark for the first time since the first Covid-19 cases were detected in Indonesia in early March.

The National Covid-19 Task Force also reported a record of 715 patients who recovered from the disease in the 24-hour period, bringing the total recoveries to 12,129.

The total death toll from Covid-19 is put at 1,959, an increase by 36 from yesterday.

Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said the soaring cases in recent days were mainly attributable to the increasing testing capacity.

“With a more aggressive contact tracing, we can detect more positive cases. It is our hope that they can self-isolate to prevent transmission to other people,” he said.

Five provinces reported three-digit number in new cases, including East Java with 273 cases, South Sulawesi (189), Jakarta (157), Central Java (139) and South Kalimantan (127).

He said more than 17,000 specimen tests had been conducted since Tuesday, the biggest number of daily testing.

Jakarta has 8,503 cases overall to stay on the top, but East java is closing in with 6,806 cases. Since the start of the month, East Java has registered 709 more cases than the capital city.

If the trend continues, East Java will surpass Jakarta on the top in less than two weeks.

South Sulawesi, with 2,383 cases, sees a faster rate of transmission and is getting closer to West Java (2,506) on the third place.
