F *** in’ infection! Youth group holds cussing contest to help people vent … in Javanese

Numerous studies have found increasing levels of frustration, anger, tension, worry, anxiety and other negative emotions throughout the pandemic.

While some individuals have relied on meditation, yoga, aromatherapy and other relaxing approaches to handle their unfavorable feelings, a group of Yogyakartan youth has found an uncommon method to vent their pent-up feelings: a cussing competitors.

The Jawasastra Cultural Motion (JCM) is holding a around the world Javanese-language swearing contest to curse out COVID-19, the (present) public enemy # 1.

” Our swearing contest intends to help the general public channel their frustrations, especially those [people] who have actually had to stop their activities due to the fact that of the COVID-19 pandemic,” JCM head Yani Srikandi informed The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Yani stated that all participants need do was to create a 3-minute video of them cursing the pandemic in the Javanese language and then submit it to Instagram with an explanatory caption.

The contest opened on July 8 and closes on Aug. 7, with total info offered on the JCM site.

” It is an ' international ' contest, because the pandemic is a worldwide phenomenon, and Javanese throughout the world are welcome to participate,” she stated.

” However, they are restricted from making racist, pornographic or sexist [remarks],” she stressed.

Yani explained that swearing was a long-held cultural tradition in Javanese civilization, which it was not constantly used to reveal anger. Cursing, she said, was also used to reveal joy.

” When I joined [my] philology classes, I found an [ancient Javanese] manuscript consisting of curse words. Even poets at the [royal palace] knew how to swear,” she said.

JCM held a similar occasion in 2018 to slam extensive social unrest triggered by problems of ethnic culture, religion and race (SARA). (nal)
