Yasonna Laoly Comments on Alcoholic Drink Prohibition Bill

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said he would not yet issue the government’s stance in regards to the alcoholic drink prohibition bill proposed by 21 members of the House of Representatives (DPR). He reasoned that the DPR has not even agreed to deliberate the bill.

“We’ll see it. I think there are still different opinions in Baleg (House Legislation Body),” said Yasonna to Tempo on Sunday, November 15, 2020.

However, the minister stopped short of confirming whether the government would agree to include the alcohol prohibition bill in the 2021 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) which will be determined soon by the DPR and the government. The determination was slated to take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

Previously, the Golkar party faction head Firman Soebagyo asked the Baleg chairman to coordinate with the government regarding the bill. “We don’t want this to happen, that if the bill is agreed and harmonized by the DPR, its deliberation is stuck in the leaders. Or else, the DPR leaders have agreed but the government rejects it,” said Firman.

The NasDem faction head Ahmad Ali shared the same concern. Ali said the DPR needed to communicate with the government considering that discussions on the alcoholic drink prohibition bill had stalled before.
