Vehicle Congestion Nearly Normal amid Jakarta Transitional PSBB

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The personal transportation vehicle congestion in Jakarta – amidst the enactment of a transitional large-scale social restriction (PSBB) – has started to return to the usual numbers seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was revealed by the head of Jakarta’s Transportation Agency, Susilo Dewanto, in Tuesday’s online discussion held by INSTRAN (Institute of Transportation Studies).

“The number of personal vehicle users in the capital city currently is nearly close to the previous period before the pandemic, which is 96 percent,” said Dewanto.

Broken down based on the type of vehicles, motorcycle users constitute 72.8 percent while 26.5 percent consist of four-wheeled vehicles. Heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses consist of 0.7 percent of the total vehicle congestion in Jakarta.

He argues that the popular use of personal vehicles during the transitional PSBB is due to the restrictions imposed on Jakarta’s public transportation such as MRT, Transjakarta, and the LRT Jakarta. “People are still hesitant about using public transportation,” said Dewanto.

“The surge of bicycle users is also hoped to present an alternative option to entice mobility among society and reduce the load felt by public transportation amidst the restriction policies,” he said.
