Transition to New Normal; Anies Asks Jakartans to Bike to Work

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has called on the city residents to utilize bicycles as transportation to work during the transition period to a new normal era. Today, June 16, Anies managed to reach his office at the City Hall, Central Jakarta, along with a bike-to-work community.

“I invite all to see bicycles as not a mere tool for exercising, but a means of transportation,” said Anies via a voice recording published by Jakarta Public Relations, Tuesday, June 16.

According to the governor, bicycles could be used for various activities, such as going to a market up to prayer houses. Besides, riding a bike does not require special clothes.

“[We] only [need] the bicycle, a helmet, our usual clothes, and then ride it,” he added. “I often wear batik, an official uniform [for bicycling], because a bike is a means of transportation. That’s what we must campaign for.”

Anies claimed he was comfortable riding a bike for 19 kilometers from his home in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, to his office. “Maybe people think that 19 km is a long distance. The truth is that if you ride a bicycle relaxedly, and set the gear ratio to normal, you can relax while riding it.”

During this transition period to a new normal era, he went on, people showed a high interest in riding a bike. The city government had also provided 63 kilometers of bicycle lanes.

“We have now added idnewsnowrary pop-up bike lanes for the safety of bikers,” Anies Baswedan concluded.
