Shootout Breaks Out in Papua’s Kiwirok; One Soldier Wounded

IDNEWSNOW.COM, JakartaA shootout broke out between personnel of TNI-Polri (Indonesian military and police) and armed criminal groups or KKB on Monday morning, September 13, in Kiwirok, Pegunungan Bintang regency, Papua. One TNI soldier from 403/WP Infantry Batallion (Yonif) was shot.

Pegunungan Bintang Police Head Adj. Sr. Comr. Cahyo Sukarnito said the gunfight occurred at 9.30 East Indonesian Time (WIT). “One Yonif 403/WP member was injured in the right arm due to being hit by a ricochet, and his condition is stable,” said Cahyo on Monday, September 13.

Besides the shootout, the armed group reportedly burned a number of public facilities, such as a health community center (Puskesmas), a Papua Regional Development Bank (BPD) office, and an elementary school building.

“It is not yet certain which group it was because we are still waiting for a report from Kiwirok. The communication network is currently interrupted,” Cahyo added.

Kiwirok is one of the districts in Pegunungan Bintang regency that is located in the border area of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
