Search for Sriwijaya Air SJ182 Crash Victims Expanded to Untung Jawa Island

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The joint search and rescue team expanded the search for victims and debris of Sriwijaya Air SJ182 that crashed into waters of Seribu Islands until the coastal areas, considering the wind blew from the west to the south since yesterday, Jan. 14.

“So if something is drifting, it will be washed away towards the island, to the coast of Tanjung Kait,” said the National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) operation director Brig. Gen. Rasman at JICT Command Post 2, Friday, Jan. 15.

Thus, Rasman confirmed that today’s operation would be extended to around Untung Jawa Island, Rambut Island, and Bokor Island.

“Because there may be possibilities [that victims and debris are washed away] to some islands around Lancang Island and Laki Island,” he said.

Additionally, vessels equipped with sonar equipment would focus on hunting the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and large debris. The SAR team would also expand the aerial search.

For today’s search and rescue operation, the team deployed more divers. “Yesterday, there were 260 divers. Today we have 310 divers,” said Rasman.
