Police Pledge to Severely Punish Forest Fire Arsonists

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Chief of police’s criminal investigation department (Bareskrim) General Commissioner Listyo Sigit Prabowo assured that authorities will carry out a thorough investigation against the land and forest fires and its perpetrators.

Sigit noted that the punishment for wildfire arsonists will be much harsher considering Indonesia is already distressed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We will solve the wildfire cases and coordinate with the court justice to hand [the asrsonists] severe punishment,” the police said Thursday, June 25.

Previously, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo also firmly ordered authorities to act firmly against wildfire arsonists after publicly claiming that 99 percent of Indonesian land and forest fires are caused by human intervention. 

As of now, there are at least 12 regional polices where its regions are considered prone to manmade wildfires and have been ordered to adopt a better monitoring system. One of which is by the use of the Lancang Kuning app that enables the authorities to monitor hotspot areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
