Police Identify Riot Initiators during Omnibus Law Protest

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Jakarta Metro Police chief, Ins. Gen. Nana Sudjana, said the police have identified the men behind the riots during last week’s protest against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation. The police suspect the provocateurs also mobilized students into taking part in the unrest.

“We have identified some of the mass mobilizers. It was them who mobilized students of elementary to high schools,” Nana said in Jakarta today, October 19.

He said the police are still working on the case, and hunting down more people involved with the student mobilization and egged them to commit anarchy. However, he said it is not the time to elaborate and provide further details about the suspects.

Jakarta saw protests for almost a full week despite being on a Coronavirus lockdown, as people reject the ratification of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation on October 5. On October 8 and 13, the demonstration led to riots.

The police have named 131 people as suspects of anarchy and vandalism, charging them with arson and destructions of public property. Only 69 people are still detained, facing prison sentences of up to 5 years.

Nana said most of the people who were arrested were vocational school students, members of Anarko, college students, and unemployed people.
