Police Arrest 7 Social Media Administrators Linked to Omnibus Law Protest

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) arrested seven people allegedly inciting riots in the demonstration against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation on October 19, 2020.

The Police General Crime Director Brig. Gen. Ferdy Sambo explained that the seven people acted as social media administrators. They were proven to have an important role in the mass protest on October 8 and October 13 in Jakarta.

“Three of them are administrators of a Whatsapp group named STM Se-Jabodetabek, three others are administrators of a Facebook group named Se-Jabodetabek, and the rest one suspect is an administrator of Instagram account Panjang.Umur. Perlawanan,” Ferdy explained on Tuesday, October 20.

According to him, the Facebook account has 21,000 members and was used to egg on protesters to commit anarchic acts. “The suspects incite people to engage in anarchic demonstrations,” he added.

The police would charge the seven suspects with the Criminal Code Article 160; and or Article 170 and or; Article 214 and or; Article 211 and or; Article 212 and or; Article 216 and or; Article 218 and or; Article 358 in conjunction with Articles 55, 56; paragraph 28(2) in conjunction with Article 45 of Law No. 19 of 2016 concerning the amendment of Law No. 11 of 2008 on the Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE Law).
