Offices Reopened; 150,000 Commuters Pack KRL

IDNEWSNOW.COM, JakartaState-run railway operator PT KCI recorded a hike in the number of commuter line or KRL passengers on the first day of office reopening during the large-scale social restrictions or PSBB transition period.

KCI spokesperson Sylviane Purba said as of 10 a.m. today, June 8, at least 150,000 people tapped their cards on the train electronic gates, an increase from 80,000 commuters during the PSBB period.

“So, the KRL passenger volume today morning alone is almost the same as a whole day volume in the PSBB period,” said Sylviane in a written statement on Monday, June 8.

According to her, the significant hike in passenger numbers occurred since people began to return to their daily activities in the transition phase to a new normal. KCI had also resumed the normal train frequency and schedule.

Starting Monday, KCI operates 935 trips per day, an increase from 161 trips in the PSBB period. Meanwhile, the number of commuters allowed in each car depends on the Transportation Ministry’s policy of 35-40 percent of its capacity.

“The Jakarta administration permits 50 percent of the capacity, but PT KCI follows the regulation set by the Transportation Ministry,” she remarked.

During the PSBB period, KCI served only 60 commuters, while now it is able to serve 74 commuters per car. To ensure the successful implementation of the policy, the company limits the number of people who can enter the station and the train to serve other users waiting in the next stations.

“The train headway in packed KRL lines such as Bogor Line has also been optimized up to five minutes, in line with the existing train infrastructure,” Sylviane said.
