Nadiem Makarim Says UI Statute Amendment Process in Line with Procedures

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim said the amendment of the University of Indonesia (UI) or the UI Statute had been proposed since 2019.

“Discussions have been carried out in accordance with applicable procedures and involved all related parties. The government received inputs from various elements,” said Nadiem on Friday, July 23.

The previous version of the university statute outlined in the Government Regulation (PP) No. 68 of 2013 prohibited the rector and the deputy rector from holding a position in state-owned companies. The latest version regulated in PP No. 75 of 2021, however, allowed the university officials to have concurrent jobs as long as they are non-board of directors.

The amendment of the UI statute was met with public outcry as it was passed amid controversies over the double position held by UI rector Ari Kuncoro. Recently, Ari stepped down from his post at state lender Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI).

As the statute has been promulgated, Nadiem said the regulation has already taken effect. However, he ensured that his ministry still welcomed any suggestions from various parties, especially the university’s academicians.

Nadiem Makarim has also assigned Director-General of Higher Education Nizam to solicit the academician’s inputs regarding the university statute. “The government hopes that UI academicians are able to conduct a consolidation and provide comprehensive inputs to the ministry,” he said.
