Nadiem Makarim: Merdeka Belajar Not for Commercial Use

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Nadiem Makarim announced on Thursday, August 27, 2020, that the Patent rights for the Merdeka Belajar (freedom to learn) program have been transferred to his ministry.

Previously, Patent rights for the Merdeka Belajar program were owned by PT Sekolah Cikal. Nadiem confirmed that all legal due process related to the transfer of rights have been completed.

Nadiem also ensured that the transfer of the right will not oblige the government to pay for any form of compensation as long as the ministry utilizes it for educational purposes and not for commercial uses.

“Because if [the program] is to be dismissed there is a possibility that it would be taken over by other people and we would have to start again from scratch. Once again, it will not be commercialized,” said Nadiem Makarim in a meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday, August 27, 2020.
