Movie Theater Reopening, DPRD: Lives More Important Than Economy

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Deputy Zita Anjani asked the city administration not to make the reopening of movie theaters clash with economic interests as she assured there are possible alternatives to grow the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In terms of the plan to reopen movie theaters amid the COVID-19, don’t make it clash with the economy, that is certainly the risk,” Zita Anjani wrote in an official statement on Friday.

She said movie theaters should only be reopened once COVID-19 infection rate slowed down, which is in contrast with the current condition that recorded 500-600 daily cases on average.

“Jakarta is at war, trying to defeat the pandemic. The positivity rate is spiking, why would anyone even have the thought about [the entertainment business],” the DPRD deputy wrote.

Zita Anjani called on the Jakarta administration to put forth people’s lives instead of focusing on the economic aspect of life as she said lives could not be a “second priority.”

“How many lives must be sacrificed for the sake of the economy?” she asked.
