Mahfud MD Reacts to Ridwan Kamil’s Statement: No Need to Panic

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD responded to Ridwan Kamil’s statement that he has to take responsibility for crowded events that occurred after Rizieq Shihab returned in early November.

The return of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) frontman from Saudi Arabia made the West Java Governor summoned by the Regional Police for questioning.

Mahfud said Kamil did not need to worry about the summon. “If a state official or anyone is called in by the police, do not panic because there are many reasons behind the call, first the police want to conduct an examination, and second to ask for a statement,” said Mahfud after an event on Wednesday night, Dec. 16, 2020.

He recalled that when he served as a Constitutional Court Chief Justice, he was frequently summoned by the police for questioning. Likewise, Mahfud opined that the police called in Kamil to gain more information regarding crowded events in Megamendung, Bogor.

“I surely believe there won’t be a criminal issue against Pak Anies and Pak Emil (Kamil) and this (police summon) is only to ask for a statement,” Mahfud added.

Ridwan Kamil and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan had been summoned by the regional police over events attended by Rizieq Shihab which caused a large crowd amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Recently, Kamil asked Mahfud MD to take responsibility for the events.
