Long Weekend Holidays Prompt Rocketing COVID-19 Cases: Govt

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The COVID-19 task force spokesperson, Wiku Adisasmito, on Friday warned that an extensive period of government holidays or collective leaves were one of the causes of rising confirmed cases.

He explained the three previous long weekends had proven to contribute to the growth, which included the collective leaves during Eid Mubarak, the Independence Day, and the third one from October 28-November 1.

“All of them caused a rise in confirmed coronavirus cases 10-14 days after and can remain that way within the following week and 2 weeks,” revealed Wiku in Friday’s press conference. “The increase can reach 50-100 percent. That has always been the pattern. The increase has gotten crazier recently.”

As of Thursday, December 3, Indonesia’s growth in cases set a record high of over 8 thousand.

He believed this was caused by two main factors: the high infection rate and the data synchronization between the central and regional governments. The COVID-19 task force frontman said this showed people’s degrading discipline in implementing the health protocols.
