IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – The Kualanamu customs officials and North Sumatra police officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle three bottles of liquid cannabis into Indonesia from China on November 6.
A Medan resident, identified by initials as JE (39), was arrested for receiving the package on Nov 9, Head of the Kualanamu International Airport Customs and Excise Office Elfi Haris said.
This drug case was uncovered after the Kualanamu customs officials suspected a package sent through mail from China, Haris was quoted by ANTARA as saying on Sunday.
They then decided to send the package containing three 10-Ml bottles of hemp oil to the North Sumatra Customs and Excise’s laboratory facility.
“The laboratory test has revealed that the hemp oil contains Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or active ingredient in cannabis,” Haris said.
Based on this finding, the Kualanamu and North Sumatra customs officials collaborated with the North Sumatra police officers to arrest JE on November 9.
“The customs office stays vigilant to save Indonesia from drug addiction through synergistic partnerships with the police and National Narcotics Agency (BNN),” he added.
Drug addiction remains a serious threat for Indonesia, and local and international drug lords still perceive the country as one of their potential markets in Southeast Asia.
The value of the drug trade in Indonesia is estimated to have reached at least Rp66 trillion, with a huge number of drug users.
In dealing with drug kingpins operating in the country, the government has continued to apply harsh punitive action against them over the past few decades.
National Police Chief General Idham Azis recently pointed out that district courts in different parts of Indonesia awarded capital punishment to at least 100 drug offenders in the first half of 2020.
“May they soon be executed by firing squads to deter others,” he stressed while witnessing the National Police special task force destroying 1.2 tons of crystal meth, 35,000 ecstasy pills, and 410 kg of marijuana in Jakarta on July 2, 2020.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo had also issued shoot-at-sight orders against drug kingpins.
However, this has failed to deter drug traffickers, who continue to treat Indonesia as one of their main markets, even as Indonesian law enforcers continue their fight against them.
