Komnas Perempuan Highlights Poverty-driven Violence in East Indonesia

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) on Tuesday announced that the poverty rate in Indonesia’s Eastern regions correlates with violence committed against women and children.

Citing the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Komnas Perempuan commissioner, Veryanto Sitohang, said poverty in the country’s eastern regions amounts to 9.82 percent, which equals to 25.95 million souls.

“Ironically, the rising poverty rate in East Indonesia is parallel to the growing violence against women and children,” said Veryanto in the press conference held by the East Indonesia Women today, August 25.

Poverty had caused the rising cases of violence as reports of women and children trafficking still dominate the report filed to the National Commission on Human Rights or Komnas HAM. It amounts to 2,796 cases of trafficking.

“The number is staggering with the highest reported in East Nusa Tenggara with 677 cases,” said the Komnas Perempuan commissioner that continues to support the efforts to reduce the number of violence in East Indonesia.
