Jokowi’s First Year in Office; KontraS Highlights Human Rights Violations

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – In commemorating the first year of the Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin’s administration, the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) gave their assessment on the government’s performance. According to KontraS, it has become more evident that the pair has failed to safeguard and uphold human rights.

“Apart from the economic recession that is in the foreseeable future, Indonesia also faces a democratic recession,” wrote KontraS coordinator Fatia Maulidiyanti in Monday’s press release.

The economic and democratic recession, she said, was caused by a number of aspects, such as the narrowing civil society space, the culture of violence, the involvement of security forces and intelligence in civilian affairs. KontraS also noted the lack of public participation in the implementation of Indonesia’s democratic process.

Moreover, the Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin administration had once again appointed people with track records involving severe human rights violations into strategic positions in the government, she added.

“Jokowi has yet again allowed and appointed former Mawar team members into office and made several statements that are against the law,” Fatia wrote.
