Jokowi Wants SOE, Private Firms to Assist Farmer and Fisher Corporations

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo wanted state-owned, regional, and private companies to assist farmers and fishermen corporations in order to establish great business models for the agrarian reform in the country.

“The role of SOE, large private companies, or regional firms is not merely as an off-taker but they can also assist farmers and fishermen corporations so that it will create a truly working business model. This has not been done yet,” said the President when opening the limited meeting via a video conference from the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Tuesday, October 6, 2020.

He recalled that he had ordered his side several years ago to observe methods by the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) in Malaysia and agri-food cooperative in Spain. Such mentoring models, the President argued, could be easily adopted, yet it has not been applied to date.

“Such good methods are easy to adopt, but I don’t know why we cannot establish one or two (farmer corporations) until now,” he said.

The state head further asked his staffers to build an ecosystem of farmer business, connect it to the banking system and technological innovation, and improve the management.

“And of course, intervene in the harvest process, starting from the packaging, branding, up to the marketing strategies,” Jokowi said.
