Jokowi Urged to Appoint Police Chief Committed to Anti-corruption

IDNEWSNOW.COM, Jakarta The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) on Friday officially requested President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to appoint a National Police Chief (Kapolri) candidate with a serious commitment to improving the institution, mainly the anti-corruption enforcement.

The anti-corruption watchdog argues that the police institution has not fully committed to eradicating corruption, which is the authorities’ main duties.

“The police institution is still perceived negatively by the public especially if it’s related to their commitment to eradicate corruption,” wrote ICW researcher Kurnia Ramadhana in Friday’s statement, Jan. 8.

He cited the survey conducted in December by a pollster, Lembaga Survey Indonesia (LSI), which showed only 59 percent of respondents representing the public are satisfied with police performance.

Referring to a 2018 survey conducted by LSI and the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), the biggest potential of illegal levies in bureaucratic services was in police institutions.

Kurnia, therefore, believes the President must appoint a replacement for General Idham Azis that truly has a serious commitment to overhaul the police institution’s internals.
